Shopping hours:

German grocery stores are closed on Sundays, so make sure you get your shopping done on Saturday.

Opening times are very different.

Supermarkets and Shops:

Mon. - Sat. : 8:00 to 20:00 or 21:00 hrs

Smaller shops or shops in smaller towns might shut down for a 1-hour-lunch-break.
Often they close between 6 and 8 p.m.

 

Usefull vocabulary:

die Metzgerei / der Fleischer = butcher shop

 die Bäckerei = bakery

der Supermarkt = supermarket

Batteries and Plastic Bottles are returned at grocery stores and gas stations as well as other stores.

There are bottle machines to return your plastic bottles and you get money back for them.

Grocery bags…

The homeowner (or renter) is responsible or sweeping the sidewalk and street in front of the house. You also need to pull out the wed in the sidewalk.

Events - social as well as business - start punctually in Germany.

If you are planning a party, tell your German friends the time you actually want and expect them to arive - don't plan with the 15 minute American buffer zone - it will not work!

If you are invited or have a meeting, and you find yourself running late, do call to announce your late arrival.
